Although a little chilly it was a lovely, sunny day yesterday. There are quite a few tidying up jobs that need doing so I thought I would try and strike a few off the list. I decided to weed last years runner bean/sweet pea plot, which the brassica's are going in this year. I dug up several of these rather unpleasant creatures, which I suspect are the larva of the black vine weevil (Otiorynchus sulcatus). However, I did read somewhere that they do not have legs and as you can see in my photo above this one did, so I am not certain. Anyone got any ideas? ...read more.

Not a vine weevil  - a caterpillar of some sort.

I didn't think it was a caterpillar because I thought it was too short. I would rather it was a caterpillar though as the thought of having vine weevil larvae on the rampage throughout the plot (I found 3 in a very small patch of land) was making me stressed. Thanks! :)

It's definitely not vine weevil, it looks like a cutworm which are moth caterpillars. They live in the soil, then at night they emerge and eat through the stems of your lettuce and suchlike, at ground level - which does your lettuce no good at all!. I had them last year, putting a cardboard collar ,pushed partly in to the soil, around the base of the plants stopped it.
