To cover or not to cover thats the question

My Father has managed to get hold of some black plastic as next year we are going to cover the beds over to stop the weeds coming up over winter and to make it earlier in the spring. Covering your plot as I have found out is split into 2 camps those whom swear by it and do it every year and those whom feel it should never be covered, me I am of the opinion you don’t know until you try it so that’s what we plan to do.WEEDS

Don't know about the weeds, they wil lie dirmant over winter, then when you remove the plastic in spring they will romp away! Having said that, covering the soil will help to warm it, and will also prevent nutrients leaching out of the soil over winter, I always cover any bare soil with a good layer of compost in winter. Like anything in gardening, give it a try and see what works for you.
