A reading from 4 to 7 the soil is acid from 7 to 8 is alkaline.
Comment by Stephen Shirley on September 30, 2012 at 19:38 Useful - but be careful as pH requirements aren't set in stone - as I have said before on this site, horticulture is a science but not an exact one!
'Ideal' is also greatly affected by soil nutrient - particularly trace element.
And remember best for the plant does not always mean best for flavour.
Picking out just a couple for example I would point out that Citrus prefer a more acidic growing condition than the just under neutral as above. Conversely the arguably best wines of the world are grown on very limy soils, or soils over chalk beds.
