The last of my lettuce were finally demolished by slugs (before the heatwave) now the slugs seem to have disappeared (puts hands together, prays, and says thank you) - So I have planted some more in a trough and have some more waiting to be transplanted - hoping I will get some decent salads out of them before the slugs return.

If I were you, I'd be looking under stones and pots for those slugs!  I've spent many hours over the last couple of days just cutting back old strawberry crowns and other old leaves, clearing the ground, turning over wood, compost sacks, pots, etc.  I found dozens of them which are now ex-slugs. I'm going to sow some salad leaves in a piece of guttering and hope they can't reach that!

I grow mine in containers and have very little trouble with slugs. If you smear a ring of axle grease or similar round the edge of the pot the slugs don't like to crawl over it. Of course, not everyone has a tin of axle grease in the shed nowadays but I suppose vaseline would do.
