Well a quick update on my early sown seeds.

Day 8

I now have a few seedlings .. leeks, tomatoes and marigolds have all popped up :-)

Nothing happening yet in the chilli and pepper propergator but  not giving up on them yet.

I think at the end of the month i'll sow some peas, beans and sweet corn ( think i have enough loo roll tubes)

Its all so exciting :-)

Congratulations Kim! It's always exciting when the first seedlings of the year poke their cotyledons above the compost. So far I've had basil, and today , the first chillis have appeared. I, also will be sowing peas and broad beans in loo rolls later in the month. What varieties do you grow? ( I think if we ever stop feeling the excitement of seeing seedlings emerging, then it's time to stop gardening)

Sadly herbs would never be used, tried mixed salad leaves once but didn't use it up quick enough :-/ in a family of 6 i'm the only one that likes salads & herbs.  As for varieties... i'd class myself as a real novice grower, this year will be our 4th season and until now we're just getting to grips with how and what to grow. I think as i become more confident i'll research varieties more closely, also a lot of our gardening is done low budget.

My tomatoe's were from Poundland ... 50 seeds plus mini propergator, 1st sowing i did about 6 seeds and 5 have come up :-) i'll see how they grow and if they all survive that will be plenty for our needs.

Are these in a heated greenhouse? I usually start off my tomatoes and marigolds, in a heated windowsill propagator in my kitchen and then transfer them to my unheated greenhouse, but haven't started yet as it's been so cold. Doubled with the fact that the greenhouse is choca with last year's geraniums over wintering. Wanted to keep them for this year, but think it's not a good idea as I now have no room for bringing my seedlings on... once they have been started!

I used to start my tomatoes off in february on the kitchen windowsill, but then I found that when it was time for them to go out to my cold greenhouse, the weather was still too cold. So now I sow them in early March and find they do just as well, if not better. I never give additional heat other than the ambient temperature of the kitchen, as I am a firm believer in the late Geoff Hamilton's advice to "Grow them hard".

Kim, be careful with your sweetcorn as to how early you sow.  It is very susceptible to frost so count back from when you want to plant out to establish your sowing date.

Good Luck
