HELP! The slugs in my garden are eating everything in sight and I have lost almost half of my tomato plants and courgette plants so far does anyone have any suggestions to get rid of them without using chemicals?

If you click on the link to the BBC site there is some really good advice to deal with them without using chemicals.
Comment by Colin Robinson on April 27, 2012 at 20:35 If you can encourage frogs and hedgehogs to visit your garden they are very good at disposing of slugs. I deliberately leave small overgrown areas and pile of twigs/garden rubbish to give them somewhere to hide.
Comment by Southbourne Gardens on April 27, 2012 at 20:37 We have seen a single hedgehog but no toads. Would love to encourage them.
Comment by Kay Morritt on April 28, 2012 at 11:18 Thanks for all the advice, I've seen toads in my garden but only on the patio in the wood pile so maybe I should put a wood pile up on the garden near the veg patch. As a bit of a stop-gap to stop the slugs eating the tomatoes that were in pots in my little plastic greenhouse, I'be brought the ones that survived into the house and put them on shelves in the hallway along with all the other plants that were in the greenhouse. It looks a bit odd but at least they will be saved from the slugs. Time to find a plan B I think and finally get my polytunnel up which has been sitting in a huge box in my hallway for the last 3 months!!!
Comment by Matthew Bowers on April 29, 2012 at 17:13 My ftaher in law has brought me down some organic wool pellets which he swears by as a fertiliser for his spuds but also for keeping the slugs off young plants - going to give it a go when the rain finally allows me out
