The sun has got his hat on - hip hip hip hooray. Well, for today anyway. It probably won't last - but I'm hoping that a little warmth will help the broad beans and peas that I have sown in the greenhouse to start thinking about growing. There's no sign if it yet, but since I sowed them it has been pretty darn cold in there. Still, there's no rush - the bed where I am going to plant them is in no fit state to plant anything - all will come to those who wait. continued at A Woman of the Soil
Same here Elaine. Keep checking the broad beans and peas in the greenhouse, but they know where they're better off! Still, as you say it does seem to be warming up.

Comment by Colin Robinson on February 28, 2013 at 22:55 I have broad beans, peas, carrots, parsnips and potatoes in the greenhouse and it's been getting up to 18 degrees in there in the sunshine but no sign of growth just yet. Lettuce, cabbage and leek seedlings that germinated in the propagator are sulking after being put out but the shallots in pots now have multiple shoots so things are starting to move.

First broad bean emerged today ooooooh! am so excited! (I don't get out much). My lettuce seedlings are sulking too colin, it's like having teenagers in the greenhouse.
Carefully thought out, you can plant the broad beans seeds out at this time of year. Early March is quite ok. I used to laugh at growing broad beans in the Gh but now I am doing it myeslef and then planting out as soon as they have a good root system. They are doing well in the garden after three weeks or so.
Save space in the propagator.
Comment by elaine rickett on March 4, 2013 at 10:02 Still no sign of my broadies yet - they do seem to be taking their time.
We have not had an air temperature here in South Dorset of more than 7*c 44*f for about two weeks, and before that since January. The sun looked out on Friday(?) for an hour for the first time in a fortnight, so colin should count himself lucky. I had planned to do garden wall bricklaying but 40*f is a tad cold for the purpose, although......
