Earlier this year I planted some winter cabbages and covered them with a fine mesh cover. There was one spare plant that I left uncovered - here are the results.
These were the covered cabbages - hardly any slug damage and no caterpillar damage
Even if I do say so myself - they are pretty impressive. The next picture is the uncovered cabbage
You wouldn't recognise it as being the same cabbage would you?
This is the fine gauge mesh I covered them with - it is now covering my next planting of spring cabbage
I think the moral of the tale is - if you want a decent brassica harvest with no pest damage use fine mesh covers or cloches
Comment by Colin Robinson on September 22, 2012 at 22:02 I use builders' debris netting for the brassicas and the fine stuff for the carrots. Both crops have been pretty good this year, despite the weather.
Comment by Caro on September 23, 2012 at 12:34 Are these the cabbages that you surrounded with slug pellets, Elaine? Wondering how you managed to keep the slugs at bay. My spring cabbages became home to many baby slugs this year and I want to make sure that my brassicas are a lot more edible next spring! All advice much appreciated.
Comment by elaine rickett on September 23, 2012 at 14:06 I can't remember Caro but I usually do - the covering was held down all the way round with lengths of wood - I expect this made it hard for the slugs to get in.
Comment by Caro on September 23, 2012 at 14:23 After last year, I'm thinking of what I can do to keep the slugs and snails off, although I suspect quite a few eggs have been left in the soil. I have a huge pot of washed, crushed egg shells ready to sprinkle round (even sharper if you bake them in the oven for a short time) and I have cabbage collars. A covering of mesh as well might just ensure their survival. Worth a try, thanks for the tip!
Comment by elaine rickett on September 23, 2012 at 19:38 I think this year has been the exception rather than the rule for slugs - the previous few years I have hardly had any in the garden - but now we know they are there it will be all out war next year.
Comment by Caro on September 23, 2012 at 20:15 I quite agree!
