I have made the momentous decision to start planting out - Calabrese has gone in at the allotment plus perpetual spinach and lettuce- they have been hardening off for a couple of weeks now - and will just have to take their chances out in the cold, hard world. We are taking a short break at the beginning of June so I want to get everything out so that my friend who will water the greenhouse for me, won't have too much to worry about. I may leave the squashes and courgettes in their holding pots till we return as they will need more water than the other plants. The only problem that concerns me is the outdoor tomatoes - maybe if I put them in the ground then cover them with fleece they will be okay. Decisions, decisions.
Comment by Catherine on May 18, 2012 at 11:45 Hmmmm....hard decision alright,Elaine. We think the weather is suppose to warm up after next week, but when have THEY ever been right..!
I would say the outside toms would do ok under the fleece at this stage.??
I'm doing almost exactly the same thing! I hope to get my Runner Beans planted out over the weekend, and I think I'll have to pot-up some of my tomatoes, since like you I am going to be away from home for a week or so soon.
Comment by David Ford on May 18, 2012 at 12:59 I have just done the same thing and planted everything out, have taken the chance after only hardening off for a few days as off to west Dorset Jurassic coast fossil hunting. the soil was in perfect condition for it although a little cold. Hope to visit a few unusual plant nurseries if the occasion arises, I`m after some poached egg plants or seeds.
Comment by elaine rickett on May 18, 2012 at 13:24 I'm glad I'm not the only foolhardy one - they've all got to go out sooner or later - may as well be sooner - have a nice break.
Comment by elaine rickett on May 18, 2012 at 13:26 I have my first batch of runner beans ready to go Mark - the second lot are very slow emerging.
Comment by elaine rickett on May 18, 2012 at 13:28 I can remember last year Catherine - I planted the toms out and we had gale force winds that scorched the leaves badly but they still produced a good lot of toms.
Comment by Catherine on May 18, 2012 at 13:37 I put my first batch of runner beans out way too early, they died and went to veggie heaven. But my second lot are now outside and I wrapped them with bubble wrap for their first week, now they are starting to twine around the wigwam stakes, about 9 inches tall now !
Comment by elaine rickett on May 18, 2012 at 13:38 I think fleece is going to come in very handy this year Catherine.
My runner beans have been out for 2 weeks now! lettuce, pak choi, peas, broad beans are all well advanced. broad beans in flower now and first early peas just starting. i took the chance as i needed the room in the polytunnel to plant! all my tomatoes are in and proably a foot high now, peppers and chillies went in this week.
Comment by elaine rickett on May 18, 2012 at 16:05 At this time of year it's a bit of a juggling game isn't it. I seem to be forever moving stuff around to make space for the next batch of things.
