I have been reading up about Comfrey as I understand it is fantastic for the compost bin but it is a weed.  Has anyone had any experience with growing Comfrey on their plot or in their garden?  I read that the best Comfrey is Bocking 14.  Has anyone had any experience about this type?  I am in two minds about ordered it as I don't want it to take over the plot on my allotment.  Any help would be appreciated please.  Thanks.

Bocking 14 doesn't seed everywhere like other varieties and has good sized leaves- it,s definitely the best one for allotment use.

I agree with Jan. I have a handful of Comfrey plants on the plot which hardly spread at all. Just dig out any that appear that you don't want.  I let it flower for the bees then cut it right back and add to the compost heap. I do that several times a year. Make sure that you wear gloves when doing this.

If it doesn't flower it wont self seed and spread. So its a case of trimming back regularly - which you are going to do anyway to compost the foliage.

Comfrey is one of the main liquid feeds  I use,its quite rich in potash but once established it can be hard to get rid of.I grow quite a large bed of it in my wild life area behind my plot.two 40gallon drums are always on the go.By constant adding leaves and water the strength varies a lot so I only use it on mature plants this way I dont worry about diluting. If use want to use the watering can with the rose on put the leaves in a hession sack  and suspend in water this prevents having to keep unblocking the rose ,liquid comfrey does smell like sewerage so careful siting of the drums is needed plus a lid as its a breeding ground for gnats.
