Another growing season is coming to an end leaving lots of cleaning up to be done. No need to burn bean haulms these will rot down if pulled up while still green, and leave the beans on that you do not want to save for seed. Use  manure  to bulk up the compost .Except for potatoes fresh manure does no good at all it needs 12 months to rot. .There are also spent hops good stuff with no weed seeds in it. These hops retain water very well and a six inch layer in the bottom of my bean trench saved a lot of watering through the dry days. They are also an excellent mulch round  currants ,and raspberries. While on the subject of manure make sure your anti tetanus jabs are up to date it only takes a small scratch on your hand and you could be in danger

Have got some bags of mushroom compost Tony, would this be as beneficial as the traditional green and brown waste added to a bean trench?
