If discoulerd cauli heads are a problem the old gardening books method of bending a leaf over the head can be a bit hit and miss, the wind can move the leaf only a little but it shows or the head grows and the leaf is no longer big enough.I find a more reliable way is to loosely tie the leaves above the head using soft string. This also allows easy access round the plants for weeding and watering, yellowing leaves are easier to remove also

To get the leaves bug enough so that you can tie up sufficiently, feed with high nitrogen
This will give good greenery and plenty to cover the head
I actually use a product called Perkla, whichis a lime based product but is slow releasing, nitrogen feed and feeds the plant throughout it's life
Comment by tony southall on October 2, 2012 at 22:30 Been using perlka for a number of years now its excellent club root control [calcium cyanamide] raises the ph to around 9 as once it gets wet forms amonnia which later turns to nitrogen. The chinese use it a lot and cover the area once treated for better results. Also helps prevent parsnip canker
