Blue skies, hacksaws and Victoriana cauliflowers

What a treat to see blue skies yesterday (and again this morning!). It stayed dry so as soon as I'd finished work (and had a cup of tea), I went straight down to the veg garden. First task was to cut down the perennial cauliflowers, a marvellous vegetable kindly provided to the veg patch by Stephen Shirley at Victoriana Nurseries.

The last florets had bolted and flowered leaving the plants very top heavy; most had keeled over in the rain soaked soil but one had a glorious cloud of white flowers with bees buzzing around it.  This one I left (for now) and staked it securely.

I'm told by Stephen that the caulis will come up again for the next three to four years if chopped back so the hacksaw was put to use on the thick stems. One, chopped back a few weeks ago, is already re-sprouting.  Amazing!

Whaddaya mean....blue skies this morning??? Oh yea ..the wind and rain we have here now is blowing eastwards.....we have already battened down the hatches !!

I never knew that caulies would re sprout again. It would save having to plant new ones next year :)

Yes we got lucky in North London - 2 days of blue skies!  Today it lasted to about 4.30 but it's still dry enough to go out and do some gardening this evening, but very very blustery.  The caulis are from Victoriana Nurseries (search for Stephen Shirley here on UKVG) - they're his Cut and Come Again caulis, a perennial cauliflower that thinks it's a PSB. Well worth investing in if you have the room - I've eaten loads of cauliflower, then had lots of mini heads on tenderstems, fab!
