Letter this morning from my surgery to remind me to call in Saturday for my flu jab also time for Tetanus booster. This one I think is wise for gardeners, slight cut or scratch could lead to tetanus, more so if you use horse manure. This made me think how many gardeners who grow veg are aware of the fact that the sap from certain plants  carrots, celery, and parsnips, can cause a chemical reaction that makes skin hypersensitive to ulraviolet light,Phytophotodermatitis. The main culprit being parsnips, the advice from RHS is to keep arms covered when working with parsnips during bright sunshine.Have seen a slight rash on one of our plot holders arm but not as bad as in photo

Or, don't grow Parsnips........

Tony, I was led to believe that after so many tetanus injections, you no longer have to have them. Or that's what I was told by my quack

As for Parsnip burn, I know all so well. I had it last year with my Parsnips and had blisters over my forearms which were like chemical burns

This is what I wrote at the time

Darren  I was told the same but our practise nurse plays safe and every 10 years its a booster.Having bsaid that have only had 5 over 75 years

What was she doing  - rolling in the parsnip patch?

Joking aside, the crops you mention can indeed be nasty and a few years back Brian here at the nursery really did some damage to his arms after weeding through the parsnips.

On the Tetanus side, it would be really nice to go 10 years without a trip to A&E - and the question are you up to date?

I find Stephen a lot of our younger plot holders are the ones who see no need for anti Tetanus jabs

I always say better to be safe than sorry

Would rather have the tetanus job than tetanus
