In one of my raised beds a stray runner bean plant has emerged and started climbing up the pea sticks.  It is a white flowering type growing nowhere near where I planted the beans last year.  Do you suppose it could have overwintered itself, or was it a stray bean that got mixed in with the french bean packet that I sowed.  I have given it a cane to grow up and it looks really stupid, one plant on one cane in the middle of a bed.  But hey, you've got to admire its spirit.

You never know, with a bit of nurturing it may prove to be the star of your veg garden!

Runner Beans are perennial so they will grow back but it sounds like this one is a rogue seed in your packet of french beans - this seems to happen quite a lot, it would be interesting to visit a seed factory and see how they pack the seeds!

I've also had these random daft single plants but as Carolyn says, they can turn out to be really productive - often find the self seeded squashes are better than the ones we've planted and potted up. I find it hard to pull up things that have appeared by themselves!

Like Sarah, I find it hard to keep to my garden plan by pulling up self-seeded plants - as my veg patch this year bears witness to! It's such fun to see what's going to pop up!
