After disaterous couple of weeks which resulted in this week me being made redundant and breaking my iPhone I finally managed to secure myself a sizeable allotment on Friday!!! Hoorah!!
I received some useful and helpful advise from the allotments secretary I chose a location close to the water source, near the entrance and also to the car park. All agreed and just about to sign when was informed it was plot 13!!!
Having tought about the luck I have had of late I decided to face the superstition head on and accept!!! Plot 13 it is!!
My summer project is well underway with working out how to clear the site as quickly as possible... It could take some time.... As you can see it is in need of a little of attention!!
I have gathered up some tools and roped in a reluctant volunteer, but more importantly - a guy with a rotavator!! :-)
I have started on the list of things I want to grow and preparing myself for the motivation to work out where to start!!
The begging, stealing and borrowing of plants, cuttings and seeds ready to try and fill it has begun!!
Its all very exciting - the work starts on Monday and I think will include some a glass of Pimms to celebrate the start of my new english garden!!

Love that its next to the stream, what a peaceful place to sit & dig.

Comment by Steven Monks on May 28, 2011 at 20:01 sorry guys - hadnt meant for that to be a "woe is me" about the job!! But thanks for your comments anyway!!
I'm certainly looking forward to having the time to properly plan and action what i want to do on that plot!
I was a bit confused Zoe - Stream?? Looked at the photo and realise u were looking at the road!! Unfortunately no stream - the water source is a stand-pipe thing!! But the bit of road by me is tarmac'd so thats almost as good bonus as a stream!! hahaha
Any recommendations on things that I should most definitely certainly should grow??
Comment by Steven Monks on May 28, 2011 at 20:03 Elaine... to be fair I am in one of the more "unpopular" sites that is on the outskirts of the city in an area that people advised me against getting an allotment... so I dont think they would hesitate getting tenants in if they were willing to go into that area.
Apparently this plot hasnt been used in some years!!
Birmingham City Council have been fab in sorting it all out for me to be fair...
Comment by Flighty on May 29, 2011 at 21:08 Good luck, just take it steady and enjoy yourself! It's a good time to take on one as you'll be all good and ready by next spring if not before!
And don't forget to take plenty of photos to show us how your progressing!

Comment by Steven Monks on May 30, 2011 at 20:41 Unfortunately rain stopped play today so didnt get to go up to the allotment as didnt think wet tall weeds, rain and a big machete was a good combination!! lol
I have therefore logged on to catch up on goings-on on here and to utilise google maps to assess my plot and try and get some research done for the planning!!!
Did pop into a garden centre and have now added red kidney bean plants and sprouts to my collection!! With all these beans i am planning on planting I am going to need to bulk buy some bamboo canes!!!
