They'll only rot if they're in waterlogged soil.

There are drainage holes in the bottom of the sacks - I've covered them over for tonight - will see if they have dried out a bit by morning.

They'll probably be grateful for the rain at the moment but if the deluge continues they might get waterlogged. I suspect they'd need to be waterlogged for weeks rather than days to suffer any real damage.

You've made a good point Elaine.  I've got potatoes in sacks and thought they were looking a bit soggy yesterday.  (That and a creature has been sticking a snout in and poking around.)  I think I should raise the sacks up onto bricks and wood if this rain continues. They seem quite happy for now and have put on 4" of growth in the last week! (Time to earth up again.)

Yes Caro, there's a difference between keeping them well watered and overwatered which they have been this week.  I covered mine over last night in the hope of them drying out a bit - good job I did as it has been tipping it down all day.

We seem to be having sunshine and downpours - you don't know from one minute to the next what will happen.  I actually managed to get my washing dried on the lines yesterday!  Give it a few more weeks and we'll be wishing for rain I'm sure!
