Who & where I am

I'm one of the Brit ex-pats who didn't opt for Spain or France. We chose Western Norway, having had over 30 years of wonderful hiking & natural history holidays here. I was a keen gardener in UK, but had the usual tiny garden of a 1960s bungalow. When we decided to move, it was a huge step & we wanted it to be something to last.…

I've checked a variety of deep containers to hold the soil in my back passage, which is concreted, but facing due south.   I had to look at the depth of the tap root on one or two of this year's tomato plants, to be sure that I am buying something deep enough to produce as good(Brilliant) tomatoes as I have had this year, but without wasting bed space in non south facing beds.

Jumping the gun a bit I s'pose.  I've had between 15-20lbs of tomatoes nearly all very good, few spoiled, of…

Hampshire DA Mini Show

Each year, the Hampshire District Association of the NVS, hold a mini show where it gives people the opportunity to give it a try to see if it is something they like and some light banter between members

It's nothing too serious but looked at as an introduction to vegetable competition

We have a guest judge who walks around and talks through what is is looking for, to the members, to give them some idea of what they need to look for. This is very informative

A new beginning

I accidentally deleted my old blog and have been unable to retrieve it

Therefore this was the ideal opportunity to start a new one with a slightly different direction

My aim is for a blog on growing quality veg for the kitchen table as well as exhibition, by taking some of the methods and techniques from exhibition growing and using them in everyday growing, so that hopefully everyone can benefit from it

I hope you all like the new blog and format but this is my first…

it's arrived!!!

Well, I picked my course from the learning curve (borders connect), rhs cert 2.  It arrived today by a rather clueless but funny delivery guy, who knocked the day and asked if he would accept a parcel for a neighbour, I asked who it was for and you guessed it, it was for me , he had got the house numbers mixed up, he stood there looking at his clipboard saying well it said number 6 before, then he realised he had read the address on the next line for the house number!!  But I suppose its…

Change is afoot . . . Downsizing, big time . . . New Challenges ahead . . .

This will be the last season at my plot.  The field is being sold.  The reasons are complicated and out of my control.  It will be a sad day when I close the gate behind me for the final time.  I  raised hens and chicks, ducks and pigs and sheep and  lambs and my beloved goats and kids up there.  I have visited it every day for nearly twenty five years and tended the plot which has provided much of our food. continued
