Early start on the morning burning the brambles that I'd cut back from the boundry behind my plot.Fire going well filled in my bean trench with a few barrow loads of compost.Removed the few weeds that had grown through the weed supresent on paths and covered with a thick layer of wood chips .These are supplied free the guy who trims trees is glad to get rid of them,they look good and keep your boots clean.

Using 40 gall drums cut in half and bottoms removed ,fork ground over where drums are going to stand and rake in a handful of potato fertiliser every sq yd. Put a 6in /15cm of compost in the bottom of the drum and use a hand fork to mix in a good handful of potato fertiliser Add just one seed potato per barrel then use a bucket to fill the barrel with compost. To each bucket of compost add a small hand full of potato fertiliser and the same of rock dust. Leave space at the top to add more…

During the 1940s an American group of soldiers operated a search light about 150 yds from our allotment this was like a magnet to us kids plus they always gave us a packet of chewing gum ,this was much prized .Another big attraction in the winter was the night watchman always a gang of kids having a warm by his coke fire. Had a catapult [black country flirter] grandpa Bill made it for me 1/4in square elastic metal frame the envy of my mates. Mother was not too keen on me having it so I did a swap with a mate.
