"I have a gooseberry hedge which is very effective in keeping the boy next door out of my garden. They are easy to propagate and layer so wouldn't be too expensive to get you going - also they don't mind shade."
"Our preserves cupboard is still well stocked with chutneys and jam - probably enough for the rest of this year too actually ;) Plenty of dried herbs left too.
The freezer isn't quite so packed - we've still got some…"
"To echo what you guys have said, I've (probably) lost my bay tree and my rosemary bushes, and also an oregano plant that had survived a couple of chilly winters but bit the big one this time. I also lost the most of the spring greens left…"
"Not for my plot but for our chickens - I carried a tonne of woodchips down four flights of stairs for the girls a few weeks ago.
My father-not-in-law gets our woodchips from the local council depot - they sell off their surplus for about…"
"I won't be growing peas because they were a flop here - the few that did grow were slug food in minutes. Related to that, I'm shying away from anything that I need to have a lot ready to pick at the same time to make it worth…"
"Don't forget that you can get all sorts of completely free, old-school gardening books if you've got a Kindle (or any other way to read ebooks, including online) on Project Gutenberg - a non-profit/volunteer-run organisation to save &…"
"We don't have a lot of bed space so I'm always on the look out for containers - like Colin, Flighty, Sarah & Patrick, I'm always thinking "what can I reuse that for?" (not helped by the fact I run a website which has…"
"Due to a completely uncharacteristic (ahem) bout of laziness (leaving the plant inside after being brought in for harvesting), I've inadvertently overwintered some chillis. No new growth yet so there is a possibility that even indoors, it…"
"Favourite to eat: peppers and chillis.
Favourite to grow: chillis - I tend to use hot seed blends to get a few different types in limited space - and courgettes because they give and give. This year I've got Black Beauty and (hangs head…"
"As I've mentioned on another board, I'm having the Year of Fruit this year - we didn't grow any fruit in the garden last year (just foraged stuff) but this year we're going fruit tree, bush and runner crazy. I suspect to be…"
When I was looking for one last year, I set up an ebay alert thing - any greenhouses within a 25 mile radius of where I live. Worked well - or it would have done if I hadn't kept forgetting to bid...!
"Thanks for posting this link - I must have read it when it was first posted but clearly my memory isn't as good as yours ;)
(And of course thanks to Gillian for writing it in the first place!)
We've got some south-facing but…"
Many thanks for the gift! So sorry to hear about minnie, what bad luck. My Grandad used to keep hens and he always said that they" went into a decline really quickly". I'm sure the experience will arm you with a few pointers for the future-all the best wisdom comes from difficult times. Keep your pecker up(sorry!).
I'm glad you enjoyed Animal, Vegetable, Miracle. I don't foresee a lot of time for reading coming up. Maybe spring will come early this year... I'm already shuffling around the shed looking out my trsuty propagator to get those celeriac and tomatoes underway.
