March Sowings

Started this discussion. Last reply by Sue Magowan Mar 2. 23 Replies

1st of March tommorow and there is plenty of seeds to be sown.  When I look back at my records from last year, it seems that I spread my sowings out over the month, but I was just wondering what…Continue

I must admit that I do feel a bit jealous when one day you walk past someone's plot and it has the same sort of weeds as you do and you can feel a bit better about having those weeds and then all…Continue

Poundland Bargains

It seems I am always going on about Poundland, and I must admit to going into there every time I go up the town just to look at the gardening section.  Some people may think that Poundland is only…Continue

Peas in Guttering

Started this discussion. Last reply by Samantha Smith Feb 17. 7 Replies

Has anyone had good results with sowing peas into guttering?  I have seen it recommended in a few books now and my husband has sorted me 4 old sections out to give it a go.  Worth it or not?  It is…Continue

Beat the Heat

This week on the allotment has been all about trying to 'beat the heat'.  I have been getting down there early and doing as much as possible before it gets too hot.  The good news is I have a lovely tan.  The bad news is that plot 2 still needs alot of work: area in middle still needs digging over, stuff to plant out still and the pressure is on because as of the 1st of June the allotment 'judges' could come round at any time between then and 31 July and decide whether you are worthy.  My hopes…See More

"One of my Dorset highlights.  When I mentioned the gardens to the kids they groaned, but when we got there they loved looking around these amazing gardens and the 12 year old took as many photo's as I did!"

Brassica Protection: more tricky than I thought

Last year I was a newbie to growing Brassica's and although my crops grew very well I did not protect them properly.  This year, armed with the knowledge that butterflies climb through large holes I am using fine mesh  netting for these crops.I had visions of perfectly square brassica 'cages' created from using canes and plastic bottles.  However, I soon found out that one's vision does not always come to pass and I am left now with some rather dodgy looking tent like structures dotted around…See More

Kitchen Full

Posted on May 6, 2012 at 11:18 0 Comments

The nights have been milder recently at 8/9 degrees where I am so I have left everything in the minigreenhouse at nights, but the last couple of nights it has started dropping back down to 5/6 degrees so I am back to bringing everything into the kitchen before bedtime.  Trying to make a cup of tea in the morning,…

Melon plants

Posted on April 26, 2012 at 10:37 2 Comments

The Melon Plants are growing very well.  Especially the Emir melon plants which are looking like they will want to start trailing soon.  But with the coldest May in the histroy of mankind forecast I'm wondering whether Melon will be on the menu afterall.  Will it be warm enough in them coldframes to do the job?  Who knows perhaps it will turn out to be a real scorcher of a summer and we can look back and laugh at what a rubbish April we had.…
