Ruth replied to Jan Willetts's discussion Home made compost for acid loving plants.
"Do any friends still have a real Christmas tree that they still have? I use the needles from mine and use them as a mulch on acid loving plants.  Seems to work ok."

"Really super flowers - I'm a bit of a tight arse and dug these up from our old garden before we moved to where we live now.  They've naturalised quite brilliantly on the shaded side of the garden.  I'll check your blog out…"

"These were indeed unstable - even when weighted down with bricks the wind still managed to take them a couple of times.  It's one of the reasons I decided to buy a proper greenhouse - the shelving all got reused as staging in the permanent…"

"I love those! I found the 4-tier ones to be very unstable, but I have 3 of the 2-tier ones, which I find invaluable."

Ruth replied to Alderandash's discussion Wool as mulch?!
"You can most definitely put it in your compost heap - I am also a spinner as well as a gardener and I regularly put "waste" wool that I can't spin into my compost heap and it breaks down with no problems at all.  Failing that,…"

A Bit About Me

I'm a 37 year old full time mum of two and wife to Chris.  I've been gardening for about two years now so still very much the novice.  I don't have an allotment but instead dug up half of my garden to accommodate a couple of small veg plots and a greenhouse, in addition to container growing and sticking stuff where there's a gap!!  I try to grow a variety of produce for use in my kitchen including herbs.  I am very keen on the methodology of companion planting and "plant where you find a gap" gardening and encouraging beneficial wildlife to my garden through the planting of flowers, etc - I like a bit of pretty in addition to my veg!
