"Thanks for all your replies, in the end I went for Chris Bowers and have gone for 5 apples (James Grieve / Egremont Russet / Jonagold / Red Windsor / Bountiful) & 2 pears (onward / concorde).  I found the Chris Bowers brochure clear in its…"

"Try this website http://www.walcotnursery.co.uk/. I haven't used them yet but they have a good selection and are organic. I saw them at a local organic gardening festival and the fruit trees they had for sale looked very good quality."

"I planted 5 cordon apples last year - two Bramleys, Fiesta, Egremont Russet and Red Falstaff.  I had fruit from Fiesta and Red Falstaff (oddly the fruit of Red Falstaff was green, not red - maybe not enough sunshine or maybe i've got the…"

"In one of my previous gardens I had four cordon apples and they were spaced about 1 metre apart. They do take a lot of looking after in terms of pruning and the supports need to be very secure. Mine were trained along three steel wires and the…"

"there are loads of varieties out there, so its up to your choice of flavour , texture etc. Concorde pear is a nice mix of conference and comice. I bought mine from Crocus, but that was before i knew about Victoriana nurseries, who will give you 10%…"

Apple cordons

I am planning to grow apples (and possibly pears) in cordons along the south facing fence of our garden (SW London).  I have approx 4-5m and am wondering if anyone has any thoughts or practical experience on spacing and varieties.   Ideally I would like a mixture of early and late varieties (for storing) and one/two reliable pear varieties.  Also any recommendations of where to buy the rootstocks. Thanks for any help. Richard See More

"Ok, an update.   Augergine plant is looking good if a bit smaller than expected, lots of pretty purple flowers but they seem to be dying off before growing any fruit.   As I've got this inside, do I need to be self pollinating the…"

"I love the idea of growing aubergines, as they are so expensive in the shops & never taste of much.  I'm expecting home grown to have a load more flavour - I just hope the seeds produce something."

"I'm giving them one last chance (only because I had some seeds left) and if I don't succeed this year then clearly me and aubergines aren't meant to be. :/"

"I'm trying an Aubergine this year (well 6 actually), as I saw the flowers & thought they looked lovely.  I'll just keep the greenhouse door open a lot & hope for the best."

"It will do ok in the conservatory provided it doesn't dry out and will appreciate the warmth. Can be a bit prickly/hairy and will benefit from weekly feeds of tomorite/ tomato feed. An attractive plant, yield will depend on variety and growth I…"
