Are cat-scarers any good?

I have seen some adverts for battery-powered ultrasonic devices which supposedly deter cats - and most importantly for me, foxes. Has anyone got any first-hand experience with these things? Do they…Continue

Did anyone sow Broad Beans last Autumn?

Started this discussion. Last reply by Trevor Alun Davies Apr 2. 3 Replies

I'm interested to hear whether anyone sowed Broad Beans last Autumn, and if so how they have performed. The Winter seems to have been so cold and so prolonged that I wouldn't be surprised to hear…Continue

Pruning apple trees - advice requested

Started this discussion. Last reply by Zazzy Mar 5. 8 Replies

I have planted a small apple tree - a Bramley - looks as if it is in its second, possibly third year. It has a very long (approx 4ft) leader. Should I prune this back hard or leave it? I have seen…Continue

About me

I live in Fleet, Hampshire, with my wife Jane. I am a long-time (25 years) gardening enthusiast, with a particular love of growing edible stuff -- veg, fruit, herbs.
I have two adult daughters, both of whom have inherited some of my love of gardening -- though they both have other interests too. The older one has children of her own now, and is doing everything she can to ensure that her little ones (Lara & Holly) understand from the earliest age where food comes from and how we grow it.

I am also a keen amateur cook, and I just love cooking stuff I have grown in my own garden!

What a fantastic selection of photos Mark :-)

Do all the tomato varieties taste significantly different from each other?

You can be justly proud! And that pizza looked lush!

Hi again! Very small world indeed. I pop back to Fleet regularly to visit my family who are still there. Thank you for your lovely comments on my photos - I'm a complete novice too, I just do my best with an old compact camera. I'm hoping to upgrade it one day - or borrow my husband's DSLR :-) I think your photos look great and you seem to have a bountiful harvest from your plot.

Thanks, I may take you up on that one of these days! :-) You're not far at all from my folks' place which is a pretty short walk or cycle ride to the Courtmoor area too. They're keen gardeners too with a lovely established garden, though they don't have the space for much veg growing, but they manage to find space for the usual tomato, cucumber, courgette, climbing beans kind of crops... Your tomatillos look intriguing.

My camera is pretty similar spec to yours then, I've a 4MP Samsung, my first digital camera that I bought for a big adventure abroad about 6 years' ago. I'm pretty familiar with most of its tricks now, would love a proper DSLR one of these days, though the learning curve would be pretty steep. Still we should have lots of free time once we finish work on our house!
