"There's the Irish Sea between me and your event so I'm not likely to make it. I've heard so many good things about Victoriana though so I'm a bit disappointed I won't be able to attend. Hope you have a brilliant day…"

"Great...I have some tomatoes that I need inspiration for and I might just try this. I bottled about twelve jars of 'Chopped Tomatoes' but a good sauce will come in handy too."

My Allotment Challenges

This is my third year of having a plot at the Laxey allotment and during that time I've continued to update my bed layouts and to try different types of crops. Even so, I feel that I sometimes make decisions that turn out to be less than ideal for my growing situation. If it weren't for these well-intended mistakes then I believe my yields could be higher and I could decrease…See More

Moving a Honey Bee Nucleus into a Hive

Last Thursday I brought my very first nucleus of honey bees to their new home. It was an exciting evening for me and I spent a bit of time watching and listening to them buzz near the nucleus entrance. As far as I know, there aren't any other hives in the immediate vicinity so I think they'll love their new territory. They'll have the allotment and glen to forage in for sweet nectar and…See More

"If you read a bit further in the blog post you'll see that I'm selling all but a couple of handfuls at my Farmers Market stall. If I were only going to sow a few seeds I might use a similar strategy to your own."

"With all those toms you're going to be eating them with every meal! I sow my toms and peppers in individual paper pots. It's much easier to transplant the whole thing into a larger pot and there's no root disturbance."

Potting up Tomato Seedlings

Seedling season is ramping up and the first of my little plantlings to be pricked out and potted up are the tomatoes I sowed back in January. All three varieties, Moneymaker, Yellow Stuffer and Gardener's Delight are over an inch tall and quickly using up all the space in their trays. So it's quite urgent that they're pott...…See More

Afternoon in the Allotment

My back is killing me...but I've got my big bed at the bottom of my plot weeded of dock and creeping buttercup and dug over again.…

Amazing! I live on the Cumbrian coast....not that far from you but you seem to be well ahead of us on the mainland. Our daffs are starting into flower but no sign of cherry blossom here.

We have a unique climate on the island...it never seems to get that hot in summer but funnily enough the winters aren't cold and spring comes a bit early. It must be the Gulf Stream :)
