Well this is  my sixth season growing veg in my garden.  I now have 10 raised beds 1.5 x 4.5 mtrs and 5 beds 1.5 x 3 mtrs plus another area approx 4 x 10 mtrs.  I also have a 12ft x 8ft  and two 8ft x 6ft green house  .  I have become interested in showing veg and joined the National Veg Society (NVS) in 2012.  My aim for 2012 was to bench veg at the Scottish Branch show (NVS) at Kelso, unfortunatly this did not pan out. I did however have a sucessful show season at a number of local shows.  I am more determined than ever to get produce ready for the Scottish NVS show which is being held at Dundee over 3 days 6th to 8th of September.

My main show veg will be potatoes, stump carrots, shallots & cauliflowers.  Again I will be trying , Parsnips, Onions from set & seed, Blanch Leeks, Beetroot and Celery.  It is hoped that I will have a poly tunnel erected this year 20ft x 10ft and it is my intention to have Onions, Blanched Leek and stump carrots in this area.

I've grown Starburst this year and have 24 plants potted into cells and growing nicely. Here are my large onions they have about 6 true leaves and vary from 22 to 26 inch long.  I have them in 1 ltr pots and still under lights giving them…See More

H i john, i see what  you mean  about your stump  carrots i might try them my self next year, this year i am trying the exhibition strain in the long carrot class to see if i do improve . Last year i used the new intermediate strain ,i am not going to say they were bad but i think i did not use the right mix so we will see what happens this year. all the best.

Hello again john, i should also mentioned that i also used sweet candle stump carrots and to be honest with you considering i grew them in pop bottles  they were very good. I will still grow them in my pop bottles and see what the results will be with a different mix. geoff

Hi john,

Thank you very much for your comment i was wondering if you had any tips for growing long carrots and parsnips such as what type of fertilizers to be added as i seem to be having a dismal time with those so any tips would be very much appreciated thank you , garry

Impressive stuff, John. I won the novice's cup at my allotment show this year, but I was the only entrant in a lot of the categories! Haha.

Valentine Onions!!!

This week has been variable with sunshine at the start of the week and then snow and frost mid week and sunshine at the weekend. I also received a Valentine's gift from a fellow grower.  I must admit its the first time I've ever received onions on Valentines day.  Helen Vincent my very good fellow grower sent me 24 onions via the postal system.  I potted them up straight away and they are starting to settle in nicely.  If I manage to grow them half as good as last year…

Posted on January 27, 2013 at 18:59 3 Comments

The weather was a bit better today but we have suffered from snow and hard frost for the last week or so.  Today was spent in the greenhouse re arranging my leeks & onions and sowing my first lot of Celery, I've elected to try Star Burst this year and I'm hoping to have some ready to show On the 31st of July at The Black Isle show, hence why I'm starting so early.  I also sowed my Parsley today in the hope that I'll get some plants for our local shows.  I've sieved my…
