Are the potato plants out of the small potatos left in the ground any good?

I got several of such plants.  I am not sure whether they will grow up to be decent plants bearing potatos. Continue

"We all miss some when we dig them up. They're called volunteers, and yes it's worth leaving them to grow. They probably won't be as big, or as many, as ones grown this year but still usually worthwhile. "

MARCHING ON...

Posted on March 30, 2012 at 14:00 0 Comments

It’s the warmest and driest spring in recent memory!

All the seeds I sowed managed to come up including the heat loving cucumber and chilli. Cucumbers have 3 leaves now, and the Chilli has 3 pairs of leaves each, which is remarkable to me. Last year I waited and waited for them to come up in vain; I also have 5 tiny upright chilli called firecrackers. I bought them last summer but almost forgot them. When I came to sow them a week ago, I felt cheated by my purchase, it only…

Sowing for autumn and my second year of GYO review

Posted on August 28, 2011 at 20:13 4 Comments

August bank holiday means the end of summer and also the end of the best growing season.  However there is still a window of sowing opportunity for cold tolerated vegetables.

I planted garlic bulb yesterday and sowed rockets, peas (for pea shoots) , carrots, chinese leaves and pakchoi today. Hopefully they could provide next round of  crops right into December.

In my kitchen garden, runner beans and french drawf beans just came to flower; the only tomato grown has many many…

Happy Potting around

It's a beautiful sunny afternoon!  I repotted the lemon tree.  It has grown good 30cm since moving indoor last November.   Yesterday I gave it some pruning and noticed some tiny lemons have formed.  I wonder how they managed to polinate themsevles.  I enjoyed their scent so much and there are always so many things to do that I forgot to help them.  I  hope they are real lemons and perhaps two or 3 of them will manage to grow into decent size?  I have never been successful with lemons;  only…

Early Spring gardening day

Posted on February 12, 2011 at 21:00 3 Comments

Today is the first real gardening day of the year.  It's so warm I almost wanted to sow rocket.   Instead I planted out several strawberry plants saved for the ones lost during the cold winter.  I also planted the 20 dutch irises around the vegetable plot4 lily against the potting shed, and 20 other mixed colour bulbs around the borders.

To my great delight, Japanese greens musuna sowed last summer survived the winter!  They were sowed at the wrong spot under the…

Hello and welcome. I'm a Leicester gardener too, having a good first year. My biggest problem is finding the time to keep on top of everything that needs doing.

Hello Jade I've just approved all your photos but it would be nice if they could be titled, with perhaps some additional information as well, so that other members know what they're looking at!  Thanks.
