I wonder how many pumkins per plant should i keep ? I don't want giant pumkins and monster squashes but tasty lovely ones. It's ok to let it be or shall I remove some female flowers to ensure the…Continue
The tree is nearly 5 metre tall and is bearing lots of fruits at the high braches, making cherry picking harzdous task. I wonder whether it is possible to reduce the height by half, restoring its…Continue
some of them came up from nowhere and seem to be growing well. Should I pull them up or let it grow? If they will come to nothing perhaps I should grow some green manure instead?Continue
We all noticed the season is at least a month later than normal years. When could I plant out beans, tomatoes and cucumbers? They were in the sun room and badly needed to space out. I moved half…Continue
When I predict rain at the end of March, I didn’t expect that it will last a month and 20 odd days into May. As it did, the vegetables are slow in growth. Then we had the one whole week of heat and sunshine. The first casualties are the Asian radishes and cabbages. They bolted immediately and I had to pull them all out this morning. All the sowing and watering wasted!
Broad beans and potatoes are doing quite well, the peas are suffering for the slugs keep munching them off. Cucumbers…Continue
It’s the warmest and driest spring in recent memory!
All the seeds I sowed managed to come up including the heat loving cucumber and chilli. Cucumbers have 3 leaves now, and the Chilli has 3 pairs of leaves each, which is remarkable to me. Last year I waited and waited for them to come up in vain; I also have 5 tiny upright chilli called firecrackers. I bought them last summer but almost forgot them. When I came to sow them a week ago, I felt cheated by my purchase, it only…Continue
August bank holiday means the end of summer and also the end of the best growing season. However there is still a window of sowing opportunity for cold tolerated vegetables.
I planted garlic bulb yesterday and sowed rockets, peas (for pea shoots) , carrots, chinese leaves and pakchoi today. Hopefully they could provide next round of crops right into December.
In my kitchen garden, runner beans and french drawf beans just came to flower; the only tomato grown has many many…Continue
It's a beautiful sunny afternoon! I repotted the lemon tree. It has grown good 30cm since moving indoor last November. Yesterday I gave it some pruning and noticed some tiny lemons have formed. I wonder how they managed to polinate themsevles. I enjoyed their scent so much and there are always so many things to do that I forgot to help them. I hope they are real lemons and perhaps two or 3 of them will manage to grow into decent size? I have never been successful with lemons; only…Continue
