Brittle spade

After lots of rain recently here on Teesside, I'd been looking forward to todays hard frost -3C so I could get some digging done. After about 10 mins of hard digging I heard a crack and thought the spade shaft had snapped. Imagine my surprise when the spade blade split in two!!!!It's a stainless steel blade with Ash handle manufactured by Joseph Bentley and I've had it around two years it's been put to a fair amount of digging but I haven't abused it, and it's been cleaned after every session.…See More

Autumn Questions

It's been a dreadful growing season this year here in the North East, and the last few months have given us a miserable August, a very soggy September, and October frosty cold but there has been some brilliant sunshine. Perhaps this was the 'Indian Summer' that was forecast, but with these frosts it doesn't feel like India! This time last year I was sweating in the humid sub-tropical climate of Uttar Pradesh with daytime temperatures of 30oC.Here in the UK the nights are drawing in and with the…See More

Kelsae Onions with bulbils

Posted on September 25, 2012 at 9:11 0 Comments

Last year after returning from working in India I returned to my plot to harvest the Kelsaes which had been left to their own devices for over 3 months. They hadn't achieved any great size and most were around the 1lb mark, but one was almost 2lbs. I held this onion back and later placed the bulb into a large pot to see if I'd be successful in getting any seeds. Well soon the onion started to throw leaves and the bulb began to split it eventually threw up flower spikes from each of the split…
