On my daily plot inspection I found one of the onions with a small seed head formed so I pinched it out before it could sap any more of the plant's energy. I suppose one out of a hundred and fifty or…Continue

Just a reminder for those of you who don't already do it but there's a quick and easy way to increase your stock of tomato plants. Simply root the side shoots that you are pinching out and you get…Continue

Flowers and veg.

If anyone needed an excuse to grow flowers among their fruit and vegetables let me give one.A small clump of chives in the soft fruit area of the garden. Colin Robinson commented on Garden Posts's blog post Growing Carrots in Pots

Colin Robinson replied to Fiona Craddock's discussion New to veg growing

On my daily plot inspection I found one of the onions with a small seed head formed so I pinched it out before it could sap any more of the plant's energy. I suppose one out of a hundred and fifty or so ain't bad but with the spring we've just had I think we should be prepared for all sorts of things going wrong. Keep an eye on your onions!See More

This is part of the potato plot.…

first potatoes

We had the first of the new potatoes today - nearly a fortnight later than the last two years but not surprising given the cold spring.

Hi Colin,
I'm one of the editors at Fifty Magazine, which is a brand new online mag for the 50+ - I've been having a look over your discussions, blog and comments and have really enjoyed reading everything!
Would you like to have your gardening tips/hints/pieces featured in our Readers' Corner on the site? It would be exactly the same as the things that you put on here - just the content would be on our site as well, complete with you as the author and a link to UK Veg Gardeners so that our readers can see everything else you've written and the rest of the site.

If you like the idea of this please let me know by commenting back or email me on hannah@seniorselections.co.uk

Thanks,
Hannah.

Colin - I don't know how else to get in touch with you as blogger won't let me leave comments on your blog (I can only leave comments on blogs that have Name and URL at the bottom, for some reason).  Anyway this is just to say that I am passing on a Liebster Award to you for your excellent blog.  It was given to me by Jo at The Good Life blog and part of the scheme is that you pass it on to five of your favourite blogs.  I hope you are happy to accept it.

All the best

Elaine Rickett (I will be featuring my list on my blog http://awomanofthesoil.blogspot.com tomorrow (Weds 13th Dec)
