If any of you have a shady corner, preferably with good rich soil I'd recommend growing wild garlic (Ramsons). When we moved over here I did miss picking it from the wild  so I acquired three clumps…Continue

While inspecting the main potato crop today I came across one Kestrel plant with what looks suspiciously like one of the mosaic viruses affecting the leaves. The whole plant is affected but I've left it to see how it develops. The virus is spread by aphids and the cold weather means there are very few about so I should have a few…See More

We had the first of the new potatoes today - nearly a fortnight later than the last two years but not surprising given the cold spring.

The variety is Home Guard and they tasted lovely but the yield was poor compared to my favourite Lady Christl. I suppose I…

The greenhouse potato crop is looking very healthy, even though we haven't yet had a lot of sunshine.

They've been growing away for 10 weeks now so I had a 'furtle' round under the compost and found plenty of small tubers. The biggest was about the size of a…

This long cold spring has been a bit of a trial for all of us growers but we've had some decent sunshine this week, even if it is still chilly. Plenty to be getting on with so I sowed some beetroot this afternoon. Before I could get them covered with soil the sky darkened, the lightning flashed and then a tremendous hail storm struck. End result: beetroot seeds buried under a layer of ice!…

Hi Colin,
I'm one of the editors at Fifty Magazine, which is a brand new online mag for the 50+ - I've been having a look over your discussions, blog and comments and have really enjoyed reading everything!
Would you like to have your gardening tips/hints/pieces featured in our Readers' Corner on the site? It would be exactly the same as the things that you put on here - just the content would be on our site as well, complete with you as the author and a link to UK Veg Gardeners so that our readers can see everything else you've written and the rest of the site.

If you like the idea of this please let me know by commenting back or email me on hannah@seniorselections.co.uk

Thanks,
Hannah.

Colin - I don't know how else to get in touch with you as blogger won't let me leave comments on your blog (I can only leave comments on blogs that have Name and URL at the bottom, for some reason).  Anyway this is just to say that I am passing on a Liebster Award to you for your excellent blog.  It was given to me by Jo at The Good Life blog and part of the scheme is that you pass it on to five of your favourite blogs.  I hope you are happy to accept it.

All the best

Elaine Rickett (I will be featuring my list on my blog http://awomanofthesoil.blogspot.com tomorrow (Weds 13th Dec)
