I've just taken on a new allotment after a few years away from the fun of veg growing on a larger scale (my single raised bed of lettuce at home plus a few containers doesn't really count!). I am…Continue

"It's horseradish, you're right. It's the root you need to make a relish - grated. You'll find recipes on Google no doubt."

"You can see the patch of it growing just behind The Under-gardener, if seeing it growing helps. "

Can anyone help me identify the plant below? I've got a patch of it growing in our new (overgrown) allotment, and it looks as if it was planted on purpose. I would like to know what it is before I dig it all up as a weed. It's got really deep gnarly white roots (this one snapped). I was thinking perhaps horseradish? If it is I'll keep some, although there's far too much there at the moment! Thanks!See More

Clive Scoggins replied to Damo's discussion Do your children love homegrown veg?
"Young Sam the Under-gardener (aged 4 and a half) seems to eat most veggies. He was extremely chuffed yesterday when I asked him to help me cook dinner, a DIY ratatouille-style meatball sauce. He was in charge of chopping the courgettes (albeit a…"

Clive Scoggins replied to BeckyCollina's discussion My Squash and Marrow plants don't look too good....?
"It's powdery mildew. Extremely common disease in cucurbits. I used to get it all the time on courgette and squash plants at my previous allotment - I think the spores can lie dormant in the soil for some time. Googling it will bring up advice…"

"It's just compacted mud at the moment, so I can do with it what I will. Could rake over and sow a grass seed, but then won't be able to walk on it for a while! My previous allotment had grass paths, the problem was it contained couch grass…"

"Have a good look at what's there now, is it a grass path? If there is someone who strims all the grass paths on the site it might be worth leaving it as it is - better for beetles apparently! We have a community allotment with a mix of…"

"I'm with Soilman - not only do you get chemicals leaching out, but if the carpet's backed with rubber rather than hessian you'll have tiny little bits of rubber in your soil for ever more. Lots of allotment sites now ban the use of…"

Soilman replied to Clive Scoggins's discussion Paths on the cheap
"Be a tad careful with old carpet. Some carpets (esp the cheaper ones!!) have rather nasty chemicals in them that leach into your soil as they break down. So either use Axminster 100% wool twist or avoid altogether!! "
