April sowing

The weather has been so amazing recently I’ve gone crazy in the garden. I’ve been planting left, right and centre in a green-fingered frenzy. I have, without a doubt, taken on too much this year. Not only have I taken on more work this year, particularly freelance writing, I have started running and dance classes. On top of that I’m trying to get out in the garden as much as possible. At the end of March I planted my first rows of carrots, beetroot, pak choi, radish, perpetual spinach and…See More

Purple sprouting broccoli in oyster sauce with egg-fried rice

I'm sure some of you will have some PSB in the garden soon, this is my favourite way to cook it - totally moorish.

Wash enough sprouting broccoli for two people. For this amount you will need one inch of fresh ginger and two garlic cloves finely grated, add to a wok with some flavourless oil and allow to sizzle. Add the broccoli to the pan. Then mix two tablespoons of oyster sauce with four tablespoons of hot water and a tiny squeeze of honey. Stir and add to the wok – instantly clamp a lid on (use a saucepan if your wok doesn’t have a lid) and leave to steam for 5 minutes, add more water if it goes dry.

For the egg fried rice you’ll need enough cooked, cold rice for two people (Thai jasmine rice is best, 200g dried weight is more than enough). Heat a frying pan with 4tbsp of flavourless oil. Whisk two eggs and add to the pan. Stir round with chop sticks until scrambled and remove to a plate then chop up into pieces. Throw your rice into the hot pan. Add two sliced spring onions, shake in some soy sauce and a little bit of toasted sesame oil (this makes all the difference). Keep stirring and add the egg. Cook for 1-2 minutes more and serve with the broccoli on the top.

The food on your site looks amazing and making me hungry

The transformation of your garden and work put in is also fantastic and very inspiring with you being so young

Ordered rows lol, would you believe it if I said they were exactly the same spacing apart

That's how anally retentive I can be but again there were a lot of very straight edges and identical spaces on your veg plot :)

So what do you think of the new shopping centre in Bristol?

I like it but it is to open above and bloody cold as I didn't take a coat because I thought it was all under cover

Good shops though, plenty designers shops :)

Is that the place upstairs in the main bit? There was once place we ate at on the right hand side as you face up out of the mall, the service was dreadful, that was an italian

Thanks very much Claire, the PSB's more luck than anything else, I haven't really bothered with them since I planted them out.

Hi Claire

Thanks for being my 1st friend request!  :-))

I love the photos of your patch - your raised beds are cute! What is the tree in the right hand side of the picture (behind you) - it looks like an apple or cherry?

Claire, Inheriting a productive tree was a great stroke of luck.   :-))  Yes, I have a greenhouse but only because the previous owners left it behind. My garden is more established but it is getting to the stage where I am starting to have to take things out (like a shrubby form of Winter Flowering Honeysuckle) and I still want to keep the plant .... so have to find somewhere to put it! Hmmmmm!

What are your plans for this year?

Yum yum and a very timely recipe as my PSB is just coming into its own. It's very much worth cherishing, and I'm looking forward to tasting the first harvest.
