"That's really interesting about the yield issue Stephen.  I was planning on putting in some autumn fruiting varieties this year & not cutting back to get an early crop.  Maybe I'll rethink this plan."

"With Primocane (Autumn) varieties it is a balance between earliness and yield.Leaving last years growth will advance cropping by a month or even more - but reduce overall yield by up to 50%."

"Autumn varieties can be cut down to the ground in the spring when new growth appears, but as Jan says if you don't cut them right back you'll also get an early crop. As mine are unknown varieties I leave them alone until the spring then…"

"Thank you for all advice, I dug in lots of well rotted manure before planting so hopefully I will get a bumper crop!  When it comes to pruning - when should I do it and should I leave some of this years growth to get an early crop next year?"

"I wish I had to keep puffins off my raspberries!  The only birds I get in the garden are some starlings (who are helpfully eating all my leatherjackets) and two ridiculously fat wood pigeons. "

"Autumn bliss will fruit early if you don't cut the canes right down in February, so you can get early and late crops."

"Do you have to keep Puffins off your raspberries?! Our Autumn Bliss seem to start earlier each year but they carry on well into the Autumn, so it doesn't seem to be a problem as long as you feed the plants with well rotted manure in the winter.…"

"Not a problem at all. You are getting fruit on last years canes and this is the beauty of Primocanes in that you can get a crop on the old canes early in the year - and a crop on the new later.   (and a trick we have used more than once for…"

"You've done nothing wrong!  April was the warmest on record and I'm guessing that's what has triggered them into fruiting early.  I don't think there's anything you can do except wait and see what happens."

Help! My 'Autumn Bliss' raspberries seem to be fruiting now...

I planted 6 'Autumn Bliss' canes when they arrived in Feb.  I thought that they wouldn't fruit until late Aug onwards but they seem to be flowering and fruiting now, with lots of immature fruits appearing (on what seems to be new growth).  Can anyone enlighten me as to what I've done wrong?!

"Homebase currently have sweet potato plants in stock ('Beauregard' I think) in their Jamie Oliver range.  I was tempted but at £8 for 4 or 5 plants, I'm wondering if they are worth it?"
