Hi! I grow in a very small back garden in Abbey Wood. Whereabouts is your allotment?

Ah I was wondering if it was one of those I can see on the train into London. They're at Maze Hill, I think.

I like the idea of having an allotment but am not sure I'd be able to put the necessary time into it. Do you spend a lot of time there?

I've got an allotment in East Dulwich, just by Cox's walk. During the summer I spend a couple of hours three times a week there and during the winter maybe only once a week if its not raining or snowing or frozen solid! Its my escape from the world, I love it.

I started a group on Landshare last night to lobby for more allotments in Abbey Wood SE2, if anyone's in the area.

Hello, i've got an allotment in Craithie Road, Kidbrooke, but live in Honor Oak, a small trek but worth it - great to see this group here. Gill

So what do we all think is growing particularly well this year in SE London? My soft fruit has been fantastic, but had a terrible time with black fly on my runner beans and lots of white fly on my brassicas. Potatoes have been good too.

Yes I've had loads of blackfly on my runner beans too: followed by loads of ladybirds!

I had an cucumber for the first time this year: we are amazed by it. About 2 cues a week which is hardly a glut but they are lovely. My potatoes (grown in bags) have done really well. I'm hoping the courgettes will really get going soon. I've got yellow ones this year and am not sure if this is why the crop is a bit lighter than usual.

Very unpredictable successes and failures this year: tomatoes still v green and snapping the stalks, borlotti beans only just starting to flower, potatoes not brilliant. On the plus side, squashes, courgettes and soft fruit have done really well, plus i've grown my first melon! - outside in a v sunny spot. There's only one and it's called a 'single portion' Ogen melon, so quite small. I'm sure i should have pollinated with a paintbrush etc but i got a bit overwhelmed with the instructions and just let it do it's thing. Looks almost ready to eat. there's quite a good rhs trial on outdoor melons. http://mygarden.rhs.org.uk/blogs/graham_rice_on_trials/archive/2010...

Plus i've had loads of ants. They don't seem to do much damage but i bring them home with me everytime (and put a jumper back on the other day that had them crawling inside! - 3 bites...). What cut flowers has everyone grown successfully? I want to do more of these

My tomatoes are still green too! I have one plant in a pot by the front door and the ones on that are finally starting to ripen.

I never thought of growing borlotti beans!

Wow, a melon! well done Gill! I tried them one year, total disaster. Not enough sun on my plot I think.
My tomatoes are mostly green too although today I picked 4 ripe ones and they were delicious, its my first time growing tomatoes, I didn't pinch any stems out so I have a jungle!
Would love to grow more flowers too, this year I had sweat peas and sunflowers but the sunflowers weren't good at all. No idea why.
I've had an ant infestation at home, its been awful but they're beginning to disappear now which is a relief.
