UK Veg Gardeners

hi wondered if anyone can advise me . I have just looked at the last couple of jars of my green tomatoe chutney and 2 ( from the same batch) have this very thin cloudy /milky look on the inside  of the top of the jars and lid (kind of looks like steam but not enough to be wet ).Not sure when this happened as they where way at the back of a high shelf . they are in le parfet jars and there is  no other signs of dodgeiness , colour change, bubbling ? of coarse if they dont smell or look right on opening I will ditch them but I am not actually  ready to open them yet so am wondering what  you thought ?

This was my 1st batch last year and really dont want to bin needlessly  but also dont want to poison anyone !!!

thanks

Did you sterilise the jars and put the chutney into them hot?
hi kavey ,yes sterilised in oven then hot chutney in while still hot
Hmm, not sure then. Sounds like mould/ fungus but if properly sterilised, shouldn't happen. I've not seen it before. :(
ok thanks for replying  might just ditch to be safe !
Well, I've come across mould on a jelly before, and to be honest, I've scraped the top layer off with a spoon, chucked it and carried on eating the rest and it's always been fine, BUT I can't suggest or recommend you do this as I don't know legal position or health implications and wouldn't want to be held responsible, so any such choice, you'd have to make on your own. Can only say what I've done for fruit jellies.

Hiya

I think the best thing to do is just to look on opening, as a rule of thumb all preserves last 12 months, provided that you have properly sterilised jars and the boilingpoint etc has been reached.  Mould only usually forms once its been opened and left, perhaps your rubber seals are not tight enough.  I always use screw top jars, especially if Im not gonna open them for a while, I find that the preserve keeps better.

Good luck with it, and let us know what it is?  debi x

I solomnly swear that I will not hold you or anyone else responsible for my demise after eating my own dodgey chutney if I choose to eat it !!!   lol

might just watch it to see if it looks like it is developing in any way : ) or will try and get a photo ?

Good idea on photo! :)

hi debi  the chutney is about a year old  so maybe it its nearing the end

just wondered if it was anything obvious! can only think that I havent sterilised properly but will get a better idea when I open the jar !

I also find the le parf jars too big .they seemed like a good idea

thanks

I use 8 oz jars, perfect size I think, both for making small batches and, even if make bigger batches, nice size to use and to give as gifts. I have hexagonal ones with gold screwtop lids, got them in bulk from freeman harding.
