I don't have chickens of my own for a variety of reasons (large dog, laziness, rats, space )so I rent a chicken from my local urban farm. It costs me thirty pounds for a year and i get 6 eggs per week. However, no eggs this week-perhaps they don't like the cold weather and dark nights?

Oh wow, I didn't know you can rent a chicken. :)

My Bluebelle started laying in mid-November and has been laying almost every day, even with the cold weather. I'm sure the cold and dark will have an effect on their laying, especially pure breed chooks might mind the weather and maybe some hybrids too, although they are a bit hardier. Let's hope there'll be more eggs, I haven't done all of my Christmas baking yet! :)

Dame Margot and friends(the rent a chicken scheme nickname) are laying again-apparently they had to be moved last week and it upset their routine. Down to 5 eggs a week now, but they are bigger!

I've got chickens! My friend at the farm shop was chatting to someone who wanted to get rid of theirs because of a new baby and a house move in the offing. So I now have four hybrid girls who are amazingly still laying despite the move. And a rather small house with built in run cc047 from the chicken house company. And half a sack of pellets and the same of corn. And the fence which they had round their bigger run which I may or may not use. All for £65 which seemed quite reasonable - the house is only a few months old.

I've been getting roughly an egg every two days from each of them which seems pretty good for this time of year.

Jan - Yes, that can happen, but I'm glad they're laying again. :)

Karen - Well done, seems like a good deal. Do you know what breeds they are? Have they got names? I'd love to see some pictures! :)

Hi. We've had chickens for a few years now. Only a few left who now have full range of the place. As our first ever hens we've decided they can spend the rest of their natural just pottering about.

We plan to get more this year both for eggs and for the table.

Hi all. We've had chickens for about ten years now (still learning-I'm a city brat) our 2 ISAs are laying, 1 or 2 a day the rest of our mixed bag just eat and pose, the Frizzles are bootiful, they have really ladylike feet, very fine and delicate, unlike the rest of the girls, who have big ungainly feet!
