I thought it would be good to have a place to share any freebies that you might see (e.g. seeds) or any good bargains (e.g. plants, equipment)

Comment by VP on December 15, 2010 at 14:06 Focus are selling off their £2.49 range for 49p - choose from onions, asparagus, rhubarb, redcurrants and blackberries. Your local store may have a different choice of course.
Need to choose carefully - some onions not sound but snowball variety (v gd) still hale and hearty. Also pick carefully amongst the others, but worth a punt @ 49p especially if you're starting up an allotment this year.
Also lots of bulbs in the non-veggie range. All bulbs still sound - crocus, daffodills, tulips, iris, anemones. Don't recommend snowdrops though.

Comment by Darren Blick on January 5, 2011 at 16:47 The discussion Mo is referring to is with "Grow it" magazine
If you sign up for a subscription they are giving away loads of packets of Mr Fothergills seeds, and I mean loads
I reckon I must of had 12-15 packets
Comment by Darren Blick on January 5, 2011 at 16:48 I'm sure it may have already mean mentioned somewhere down the threads but if not, do you all know "freecycle" ?
You can pick up some really good bargains on here
Just register and type in your area and you will see what people are giving away to recycle rather then just dump

Comment by VP on January 6, 2011 at 15:18 Today in Poundland I found:
8 seed potatoes for £1 - choose from Charlotte, Rocket, Pentland Javelin and Maris Peer. All good sized tubers & looked gd quality.
Large bags of onion and shallot sets. Quality variable so you need to be careful. Red Baron was the best bet. Good sized sets.
Raspberry, redcurrants and blackcurrants - couldn't see a variety so a bit like getting an offset from someone at the allotment who's been there years and can't remember the varieties they chose! Also need care with timing for these - if they've been there a while (signs of leggy growth or dried out roots) avoid. Fresh in are worth a punt at £1 each. Should soak roots to revive them before planting.
Also seeds, bulbs (Dahlias etc) and perennials.
