An introduction

Hello and welcome to Flower power which I started as I love flowers.

On my allotment I find space to grow lots of them including californian poppies, cosmos, love in a mist, nasturtiums, poached egg plants, pot marigolds, sunflowers and sweet peas.

All these are important for bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects which is another good reason why flowers should be grown alongside vegetables on the allotment or in the garden.

Happy gardening...Flighty!

I certainly found growing French Marigolds with all my aubergines, toms, and peppers worked a treat. The Hoverflies went bonkers for them, and as a result, I haven't seen a single aphid on my vegetables, or my roses all summer! Result! Worked well at the allotment too on all the various beans, no blackfly, just masses of hoverflies and ladybirds.

My greenhouse is stuffed full of french marigolds around the tomatoes, cucumber, peppers and aubergines. Not a pest in sight, the power of companion planting!

My California Poppies (Eschscholtzia californica) don't seem to mind this almost autumnal weather as this photo taken today shows!

Dahlias have made excellent cut flowers this year. After the sweet pea debacle it's a relief to find I'm not allergic to them!
