BLACKSPOT

I almost certainly jinxing myself but I wanted to say that I seem to have arrested the spread of blackspot on my roses so far this year.

About a month back when I noticed my first marks on leaves I began spraying once a week with a half and half mix of milk and water. Everything is still mark free at the moment, and usually by now Im raking up masses of dropped yellow and black leaves.

APHID EXPLOSION

Washing up liquid- the old staple. Ive added a drop or two to the milk/ water mix and while there are still lots, they seem to be rather solitary rather than huge clusters.

I love roses and have three on my plot.  The Iceberg didn't flower the first two years so I moved it and then it did but as a dog rose having obviously reverted!  My Pretty Lady is the real star with good foliage and lots of lovely flowers.  The Valentine Heart did poorly last year losing its leaves and had few flowers so I cut it right back and hoping that it'll do better this year.

I'll bear your advice in mind as I don't like spraying, and certainly don't ever use anything commercial!

I love roses, Melinda.  But they are so fragile and I never remember to severely cut them back before the spring, and then they grow long and stringy!  Particularly like the yellow ones as they are quite fragrant.  I have a Big Purple in a container (which I'm ashamed to say I've neglected...) * blush *

Thx for the tips with the milk / water ratio for blackspot.  As for aphids, ladybirds are very fond of them :p

I've been trying to write about our roses but it's probably easier for me to post some pics as the bloom.

My icebergs are in bloom. I moved the framework around this spring to ensure they get the best of the light (they grow directly beneath my neighbours sycamores), so the blooms are slightly facing the wrong way!

No idea of this climber's name, but it has responded very well to some TLC since being butchered!

Rose are opening everyday now!
