Hi all, I am just converting from grower to shower
I expect you have already read this on my other posts on the main forum
However, thanks to Damo for inviting me to this group
I hope to specialise in long carrots and parsnips but I intend to attempt a number of things this year to enter in my local show in an attempt to knock the regular old boys who keep all their secrets to themselves and hate helping and sharing any knowledge with others
I recommend that if you are really keen on showing that you join the National Vegetable society http://www.nvsuk.org.uk You will save yourself a lot of time and make some fast progress
There are loads of great people who are willing to share their knowledge and help and encourage new showers. You will soon dominate your local shows and then move to the next level
Also, take a look at my blog to see my progress and how I do things
So what does anyone prefer to show?
Obviously Dan likes his onions and he has a great blog site detailing everything else he likes also
I wanted to start with onions but was put off due to the heating costs as well as set up costs
They need a lot of heat from Nov/Dec onwards and that can get expensive
I then decided to go for long carrots and parsnips as they looked good
This year I will also try potatoes, Kestrel and Winston are a top favourite
I will try some other things to try to take as much from my local show as possible, then I will focus on a few specifics to try to get to a good level to compete at Southern and the National level
I started sieving my peat today ready for my Parsnip and Potato mixes.
Man is that tough. Took me an hour and half just to sieve one bale of peat.
I have now gone and bought a shredder as I couldn't face doing the remaining bales
Take a look at the link below
The shredder is much easier but it wasn't without it's problems
