Here's a tip if you want to increase your tomato stock.  When you remove the growths from inbetween the leaf axels on cordon type tomatoes - leave them to grow to about 4in. then taken them off and put them straight into a pot of potting compost and hey presto they take root and supply you with another tomato plant.  You can also do the same with cucumber - you know sometimes how they rot where the stem meets the compost well if you cut that part off and take the remaining part of the plant and stick it in a pot that too will re-grow.  Saves you having to make a mad dash to a garden centre for a replacement.

Another tip about cucumbers is when you cut them off the plant leave as much stalk on as you can then stand the cucumber, stalk end down, in a jam jar of water - about 1" and they will keep for weeks.  This is for when you have a glut and can't use them all at once.

@ Elaine, sounds like you've been successful growing cucumbers :)

Some years are better than others - last year I had jam jars with cucumbers in all over the place.  At the moment my cuc's are about 1" long.  I also make cucumber and onion pickle with them.

I keep celery and broccoli in jars of water in the fridge too, keeps them fresh and firm.

Just picked my first blackcurrants of the year-they were actually looking black and juicy last week but I read somewhere(?) that you need to leave them on for a week after this to let them sweeten. So I covered them with granny's old net curtains and closed the edges with pegs to keep the birds off. Redcurrants are shared with the birds as i never know what to do with them all!
