Just done a stock check on my seed packets. There's a lot and I'm not sure whether or not I'll get round to growing all of them this year.
What's your must grow veg for 2012 that you wouldn't be without??

That will be some challenge to plant all that, although you do have a shared garden, allotment and home garden, so plenty of room
Permalink Reply by Damo on January 2, 2012 at 19:27 Yeh I know not sure how the list got that long. May have to be a bit more selective than that - and this doesn't include all the seeds my friend on the shared plot has!

Permalink Reply by Colin Robinson on January 2, 2012 at 21:48 My must grow veg are all things that are fairly cheap to buy in the shops but there's just something about growing your own that makes them so much better.
Potatoes, onions, leeks, cabbages, peas, beans, salads, etc. We get through such a lot of the staple foods that I can't not grow them. I will, of course, be growing other stuff but that will mainly be in containers and I'll be trying new stuff as well.
Oh dear, I just realized that my must grow veg is all of them!!

Permalink Reply by TheLittleBalcony on January 4, 2012 at 17:56 I'll be having another go at Aubergines and Coutgettes in my tubs this year and hopefully a few other Chili varieties. Plus the usual tomatoes, carrots, leeks...
I have onions, garlic and cabbages currently growing away, fingers crossed they'll do well over the rest of the winter.
Permalink Reply by Catherine on January 5, 2012 at 17:56 Wow, yes...that is some list, Damo !!!
I am going to sow what worked well for me last year and sow veggies that we WILL eat ! Sowing less at one time and some more at intervals. I sowed enough for the kids and grandkids last year, but they didn't take as much as I thought !
This year I will definitely be planting Caulies, Onions ( a lot more to get us through til spring), Spring onions, more Red Onions, Golden Ball Turnips, French and Runner beans, going to try Savoy cabbage , Christmas Drumhead. I actually liked the Kohl Rabbi last year,so a few of them too. Not as many tomatoes as last year...had way too much......just 1 Beafsteak, 2 Moneymakers, maybe 2 hanging baskets of Cherry toms, and seeds of Pannovy (SureGrow) toms that I saved . A little more lettuces, Cos, Iceberg. Going to try to get the broccoli that we know from the supermarket, not sprouting. Will try last years Carrot and Parsnip seeds in boxes as my soil is fairly stony.Peas already are about 3 inches tall, and of course lots more potatoes. That should keep me going! Good Luck Everyone :)
Permalink Reply by Damo on January 5, 2012 at 18:54 Good luck Catherine that's a fair list of veg. I've not tried Kohl Rabi before so perhaps that's another one for my list (although I should buy some first and try it!). I grew Calabrese Aquiles F1 which is just like the brocolli we buy in the shops, sown little and often they give quite a good supply all summer.

Permalink Reply by Catherine on January 5, 2012 at 19:07 Thanks for the variety of Calabrese. Kohl Rabi is 2 veggies in 1, the leaves are like cabbage and the bulb is like turnip, easy to grow too. I saw them in the supermarket , but they had cut the leaves off and selling the bulb alone for 1 euro...!!
