Ground is now frozen hard although the frosts are forecast to ease by the weekend so I should be able to get a bit more done outside. Had a tooth out last week then it got an infection and the cold air makes it hurt like hell so I'm not spending too much time outside.
Permalink Reply by Samantha Smith on February 3, 2012 at 9:03 Good luck with your alpine strawberry seeds Colin, mine are still doing well. I did a bit of research on the internet yesterday and found out that from seed alpine strawberries perform as follows: some plants may fruit in their first year but are at their best in their 2nd and 3rd years. Pretty much like other strawberries, no big shocks there then.

Permalink Reply by Stacy Drury on February 3, 2012 at 9:14 I got 2 weeks off work, and was planning to get alot done down the plot but as of yet the weather has been to bad, the ground is rock hard! I have sown a few seeds indoors though and am on the hunt for a heater for the green house.
Permalink Reply by John Martin on February 3, 2012 at 9:25 It was cold last night. No surprises there. The whole of the hen's water drinker was frozen solid this morning and the were very loath to come out after I had defrosted it and filled with look warm water. Good news greenhouse only dropped top 9 degrees last nigh. Hate to think what the electric meter was doing.
Permalink Reply by John Martin on February 5, 2012 at 2:36 We had a fair thaw here today. Still no sign of germination with my Globo onions sown on 25th of Jan so really worried I've failed there again.

Permalink Reply by Colin Robinson on February 5, 2012 at 17:47 Risked a small sowing of AYR cauliflower in the propagator. They are pretty hardy but if the ground is not ready for them I can always grow them in big containers in the greenhouse before the toms go in.
Talking of ground, although the surface has softened up it's still frozen solid when you get an inch or so down. No work out there for awhile yet.
