UK Veg Gardeners

I've just weeded my patch of parsley which is still going strong. It's in a really shady part of the garden - down a strip between a fence and the side of the house (about 6ft wide). It probably gets sun for about 1-2 hours, but that's filtered by a tree. The sorrel there is still alive too though would be better if not munched by slugs. Has anyone else had any successes in the shade?

Good links Damo, where do you find this stuff?

I think wild garlic would be good.

We have some seeds and are thinking to plant them in shade of large oak down at far end of our plot...

Garlic will grow almost anywhere in anything

It is one of the most easiest things to grow

Wild garlic is a great idea. Think i'll also stick some comfrey in.

Thanks for posting this link - I must have read it when it was first posted but clearly my memory isn't as good as yours ;)

(And of course thanks to Gillian for writing it in the first place!)

We've got some south-facing but tree-heavy space - am tempted to try turning it into a mini shady fruit and herb garden - gooseberries, alpine strawberries, rosemary, sage...

I remember reading this for some reason even though it's almost 2 years ago now!

cellery and celeriac always do well in the shade
You can tell by looking at the leaves.  Plants with (relatively) large leaves will probably tolerate some shade, but the smaller leaved plants probably won't.  All fruit and veg need some sun!  Nothing will grow in complete shade.
We've had fantastic chard and beetroot too in the past- am trying perpetual spinach now and will see how that goes.
