UK Veg Gardeners

We are really hoping for a continuous crop of veg this year, so I have belatedly ordered some onion sets which should be here by Friday and will go in at the weekend. Have I left it too late for this year?

Mine are onion sets Zoe, seeds are different, though I would love to know how growing onion seeds works!!! Anyone?

:)

Just onion sets for me as well this year.  Maybe next year I'll give the seeds a go & see what happens.

Onions from seed are really easy - and no worries about running to flower / seed. And as the traditional time to sow is Christmas Day afternoon it gives you a great opportunity to get out of the house for a few minutes - though you are fine sowing up to about mid Feb.

Here's a little clip on planting plants produced from seed...

I noticed on the video that she was planting the onion seedlings 9in. apart.  I presume that if you want smaller onions you can plant them closer.  I usually plant 3  close together in a triangular formation so I can make better use of the space, but I also prefer medium sized onions.
Yes indeed but based that an average Red Brunswick is around 4" in diameter, you do want a bit of space for hoeing etc
They don't enjoy overly dry conditions so give them a good watering in if the rain misses you this w/e. I think the sets we get from Garden Organic are not heat treated; we usually leave a few to go to flower (pic is of a Leek flower but the onions are lovely too)
