Hi everyone,
Is it too late to sow carrots this year?
Cheers

Permalink Reply by Catherine on May 22, 2012 at 14:35 Glad to hear this. I sowed 1 row of Autumn King and 1 row of Early Nantes last week...phew!!
Permalink Reply by Danny McGrath on May 22, 2012 at 14:42 I think I might get some in tonight and at the weekend :)
Permalink Reply by Colin Robinson on May 22, 2012 at 20:32 If you go for an early variety like Amsterdam forcing or Early Nantes you can sow right through to the end of August. I do this in containers and bring them into the greenhouse when the weather turns cold and get baby carrots in the middle of winter.

I sowed carrots every month until November last year, I only have small garden and grow them in all sorts of large boxes and troughs, the carrots i sowed in October were Marion, and I covered them with a cloche, they are ready to start harvesting now, and the ones I sowed in April and coming on well.

I have some nantes that are nearly ready (I think) but didn't do many on the first run so don't want another 'charlotte' fiasco where I pull too early. They were sowed on the 6th April.
Cheers

I suspect you will be able to sow carrots much later than previously
If you cover them, this will aid germination and prevent them from rotting out with the current rains
Permalink Reply by Alderandash on June 18, 2012 at 11:31 That's brilliant, thank you - I had no idea you could sow carrots in the Autumn and have them ready in the 'hungry gap' in Spring/early Summer. I will give it a try this year! Have you tried this with other varieties, or does 'Marion' work best? I'm really interested in 'long season' growing - do you have any other top tips to share?!

Permalink Reply by Caro on June 18, 2012 at 13:03 Victoriana Nurseries do an 'All Year Round' blend of different carrot seeds. Otherwise, as Darren says, the seasons are moving on each year so the rules have changed. I sowed beetroot in August a couple of years ago and still had a harvest before winter. Last year I had freshly picked tomatoes and chillies from my open balcony in late December. The best learning curve is experience and seeds are cheap so why not give it a go? Good luck and let us know how you get on!
