What varieties of tomato are you growing this year - I have made my choices at a woman of the soil are there any good ones that you have tried that aren't on my list.

Permalink Reply by Colin Robinson on February 4, 2012 at 15:17 Popped into Lidl today and picked up a packet of Harzfeuer tomato seeds. Apparently this is an old German variety and is said to have a fine aroma and flavour. We shall see.
Permalink Reply by elaine rickett on February 4, 2012 at 15:23 This is a new one on me Colin - I never realised just how many heritage varieties there were. Really must get more clued up.
Permalink Reply by Peter Pearson on February 4, 2012 at 20:11 From various seed circles etc I have about 40 different varieties.
I will decide in the next month or so.
One definite is Sungold for the garden.
For the allotment I am going to use Blight resistant types in the hope that I get some sort of return.
Permalink Reply by Plant Frenzy on February 4, 2012 at 20:18 Peter, you might be interested in trying "Rosada"- apparently resistant to late blight and a winner in the taste department! I got seeds from t and m.
Permalink Reply by Plant Frenzy on February 4, 2012 at 20:19 Agreed, but if I can grow tasty and disease free I am going to give it my best!

I am not too worried about disease resistance - cos if they taste of nothing they're not worth growing anyway in my opinion.
Permalink Reply by Peter Pearson on February 5, 2012 at 14:25 My current blight resistant varieties are losetto and koralik. The latter has a good taste .I have never grown the former.

Permalink Reply by Petra Hoyer Millar on February 7, 2012 at 21:47 Really interesting points, thank you Elaine for starting this discussion. Based on the comments, and related blogs & links, think I am keen to grow; Egyptian, San Marzano, and Tomato 'Costoluto Fiorentino'. The last one being one of those lovely big varieties.
Permalink Reply by Colin Robinson on February 7, 2012 at 22:14 Petra, I tried Costoluto whatsit last year and it was a disaster. I seem to remember that Elaine had the same problem. Mine were hideous mis-shapen things with severe blossom end rot and big brown blotches all over. None of my other varieties were affected.
