UK Veg Gardeners

I'm being really thick here but this is a lettuce isn;t it?  I just found it in a messy weedy pile of soil.  I think it may have blown out of a pot of mixed leaves I had a couple of months ago but don't want to eat it in case it isn't edible!!

Help!!

Hello, yes it is lettuce, I stake my reputation on it! Looks like a cos type. That's a Sow Thistle next to it, and there's some grass. Sorry, showing off, tee hee. :)

Thanks Gareth, I'll not eat the thistle!!

The garden is due to be renovated in a couple of weeks so the lettuce's life is limited but I'll leave it until the last minute then cut it.

yes it is a cos lettuce, I only know because I grew some myself
Don't ask my wife, she once made a rhubarb crumble with red chard!
it looks like 'little gem' lettuce, I also grow them.  I was surprised to find slugs didn't eat them.

Little Gem makes sense because i did sow some in a container in May, and the blackbirds had a good rummage in the compost and flung everything about.  But surely it wouldn't have taken that long to grow would it?  Over 3 months?

it may have taken longer to germinate than the others because it didn't get any care and attention-also, lettuce germinate best in cooler weather so it was probably down to natural germination rather than forced germination, which is what we gardeners do!
