I'm growing Alderman peas up a wigwam of canes - do I need to put netting or string around the canes for the peas to scramble up or will they climb up the canes by themselves?

Thanks - I understand they do get rather tall, 7ft canes should be sufficient shouldn't they?
Permalink Reply by Colin Robinson on March 18, 2012 at 20:12 You will need some support as they don't climb like a runner bean they just send out tendrils like a normal pea. The first year I grew them I thought they'd just cling to the poles but the first strong wind blew them into a heap on the ground. Now I use bits of old plastic mesh wrapped round the poles and still have to tie the plants on with wire twists as they get taller.

Most garden growers grow peas either up pea sticks from the copice or a pea net
I grow my peas up canes held on with pea rings as they don't hold too well, as Colin has said.

Thanks guys, I've only grown the dwarf ones before and they were fine without any support at all, but I'll rig up some netting or something for the Aldermans.
