For some reason this year my carrots have only grown to about 3 inches in length. The radius of the carrots is great about 2 inches across - if they had grown downwards as well they would have been huge - anyone any idea why this happened - the soil was well dug so I don't think it is soil compaction that made them stop growing - strange!

The carrots roots will be getting all the water from the surface, so no need to go down searching for it
With my long carrots, I have to stop watering at the tops and water at the botom of the drums, to encourage the carrots to go down and get some length

I have some carrots in a cut-down dustbin which are showing good size at the shoulders but when I pulled a few...same problem as Elaine, no length to them. The ones in the flower buckets have done much better but they were thickly sown and would have had to compete for whatever water was available so they've gone down.
